![]() Two coils closer together, or farther apart, also sounds different. I tried too many S-S-H Strats that sound weak on the S's and then way too loud on the H, as if I was playing two different guitars.Click to expand. You can't get a single coil sized pickup to truly sound like a Gibson style humbucker, because a key part of that sound owes to the fact that there are two coils with pole pieces that are about half an inch apart. If you do, make sure that they are balanced. When I got my Les Paul I was thinking of all those players that made me get a Tele in the first place. When I only had a Tele, I was thinking of all the sounds that my favourite guitarists were getting on their Les Pauls and SGs, such as the Allmans, Mick Taylor, Page, Sabbath, Bluesbreakers, etc. Sometimes I want the single coil sound, sometimes I don't. There was an Almond Joy commericial in the 70s that they used to play during "A Charlie Brown Christmas", and the jingle went "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't." Same with guitars. They all sound great (duh, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them, no one admits to having a bad guitar ). I have two single coiled guitars (Tele and Strat), two humbuckered (Les Paul and Kramer) and a P-90 (Casino). ![]() ![]() ![]() I tried too many S-S-H Strats that sound weak on the S's and then way too loud on the H, as if I was playing two different guitars.Īs for the original topic, I like both. anyone haave any clue what i am talking about?Ĭlick to expand. If you do, make sure that they are balanced. its like their easiness holds back their ability. I won't deny that some amazing tones can come of out buckers but i rarely hear something that seemed to have taken much work to get outta that guitar. i listen to the tones produced by SRV, Paige, the edge, keith, jimmy when they are playing a single coil and i never hear tones like that produced my humbuckers. I see them play and they usually have the volume and tone wide open and never use the pots, AT ALL! I think that humbuckers give you an instant warm tone and sound good without doing much to them, but often don't deliver the intricacies, clarity and warmth that a good player can get out of a single coil. ![]() Its weird, you hand them a strat or tele and they can't get a decent tone out of it and they don't even TRY to. those that play exclusively humbucker have said that they don't like the sound of single coils because they are too sharp or too thin. Ok, i know this is probably opening a can of worms but i've noticed a couple things among guitarists i know and or gig around, see around the scene. ![]()
